About the artwork

This 2013 painting depicts a whale laying on its head with a gold circle sun at its tail. The viewer requires a moment to recognize the animal, as it is surrounded by radiant yellows and muted earth tones, rather than the blues of the water it would usually live in. The teeth and deep blue of the eye of the whale are jarring features that demand the attention of the viewer and give the impression that the creature is uncomfortable under the stifling sun. The animal and the abstracted shapes of its surroundings illustrate the struggling ocean ecosystems resultant from human habits. Using the figure of an animal that is well-known to viewers, Katz creates an illustrative visual language to make a poignant environmental statement.

About the artist

Allison Katz

Allison Katz was born in 1980 in Montreal, Canada and currently resides and works in London, England. After studying fine arts at Concordia University in Montreal, she received her MFA from Columbia University in New York City in 2008. Both a painter and a writer, puns and word associations fill the canvases of Katz’ work, drawing a line between the visual and verbal. Katz uses recurring images - animals, figures and body parts, and food, among others- in her paintings, which, in turn, form them into motifs, changing their original meaning and taking on new associations.

These motifs and images create a new language for Katz to explore and to convey in new ways to her audiences. The linkages between text and images, seemingly having no thematic connections, take on a diaristic and intimate quality. The meaning of the subjects in her paintings morph and take on new meanings. She uses both visual and physical interruptions in her paintings: the shadow of a nose protruding from the corner of a still life of a cabbage, or even sand and rice mixed into the paint pigments.
