About the artist

Kai Althoff

Kai Althoff, born 1966, is a contemporary German artist, best known for figurative paintings rendered in a personal, idiosyncratic visual language. In addition to painting, Althoff produces music with his band, Workshop, garments, and performances in “the self-confessed hope of being culturally autonomous.” Borrowing from moments of history, religious iconography, and counter-cultural movements, Althoff creates imaginary environments in which paintings, sculpture, drawing, video, and found objects commingle. In 2004 Althoff had a retrospective at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, and most recently had his first public show in London at Whitechapel Gallery in 2020. He lives and works in New York and Cologne, Germany.
