About the artist

Katharina Fritsch

Katharina Fritsch (born 1956) is a contemporary German sculptor whose work occupies the border between the familiar and the surreal. Her sculptures begin with recognizable images of humans and animals, which she then subverts through shifts in scale and color. Her work mixes reality with fantasy, and her oeuvre teeters between detailed sculptures and signs. She has represented religious figures, such as the Virgin Mary, the size of herself and painted vibrant colors, along with other life-size figures like a chef and an art dealer. She is perhaps best known for her larger-than-life animal sculptures. Each work is typically molded by hand, then cast in plaster and reworked, then cast again in polyester. She continues to create her sculptures in Germany; she lives and works in Düsseldorf. She has represented her home country in the 1995 Venice Biennale, and has had solo shows around Europe and the United States.
