About the artist

Kenny Scharf

Kenny Scharf (born 1958) is an American artist who was part of the 1980s East Village Art movement, along with Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Scharf received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1980. It was in New York where Scharf became drawn to the freedom and public visibility of graffiti art, and he quickly incorporated it into his practice.

Scharf’s work maintains its popularity in the primary and secondary markets as well as within institutional collections. The prices of his work at auction continue to climb, having reached an auction record in July of 2021 at Christie’s London for Red Balls and Orangetricity at over half of a million USD.

Scharf was included in the 1985 Whitney Biennial and has since been exhibited in prominent museums like the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, the Miami Center for the Fine Arts, among others.  He has also done special projects showcasing large scale murals at locations like the Wynwood Walls in Miami.

In his practice, Scharf is best known for his large-scale, brightly colored paintings that appropriate cartoon characters from the Flintstones and Jetsons, as well as anthropomorphic animals and creatures. Inhabiting the visual worlds of both street art and popular culture, Scharf refers to his unique styles as “Pop Surrealism.” While his work seems playful on the surface, darker themes are hidden beneath, a reflection on the dual nature of our modern society. The universality of Scharf’s work is felt throughout the collaborations he has taken on. In 2020 he collaborated with Dior on a men’s fashion line and minted his first ever NFT. His vibrant characters reverberate with the public and with viewers, whether it be in the form of a painting, a ready-to-wear clothing item, or a piece of digital artwork.

Scharf currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
