About the artist

Raymond Pettibon

Raymond Pettibon is an American artist who lives and works in New York City. Pettibon came to prominence in the early 1980s in the southern California punk rock scene, creating posters and album art mainly for groups on SST Records, owned and operated by his older brother, Greg Ginn. Pettibon is now widely recognized in the contemporary art world for his irreverent and witty paintings and drawings that reference literature, art history, philosophy, and religion to politics, sports, and sexuality. Pettibon has found success in both the commercial realm and the secondary art market; His iconic album artwork for artists such as Black Flag and Sonic Youth are recognized worldwide, and his works consistently sell for seven-figure-sums at the major auction houses. A long-time collector favorite, Pettibon’s secondary market has accelerated in 2021, achieving a record sale of $2,682,000 at Sotheby’s New York in May 2021 for his work on paper No Title (Deeper above all…), a price that tripled the low estimate set for the work.

Pettibon is the recipient of a number of prestigious awards, and his work resides in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the MoMA, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, amongst others.
