About the artist

Derrick Adams

Derrick Adams (born 1970) is a New York City based artist whose work spans painting, collage, sculpture, performance, video, and sound installation. He received his BFA from Pratt Institute and his MFA from Columbia University. Adams explores Black life and culture and is celebrated for how he depicts joy, love, and leisure among his Black subjects. He is perhaps best known for his Floater series, paintings of Black men and women engaged in activities of relaxation and play- reading or drinking summertime beverages floating in water. Additionally, he is interested in questions of popular culture and how Black experiences engage with art history, American culture and iconography, and consumerism. Formally, Adams is concerned with Deconstructivist philosophies and the manipulation of the structure and surface of his work. He is known to layer and collage every aspect of his work of art- from the images and materials to the sensory experiences that play into the viewing of his work.
