About the artist

Gary Simmons

Gary Simmons, born 1964, is a contemporary African-American artist best known for his illustrative paintings that use icons and stereotypes of American popular culture to create works that address personal and collective experiences of race and class. Simmons received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 1988, and his MFA from CalArts in 1990. After graduating, he returned to New York to set up a studio in a former school building where the artist first employed the blackboards and chalk left behind in the classrooms as a medium for his art. The erasure of the image has become a powerful and recurring theme in Simmons’ work. The use of smudged images on chalkboard-like surfaces symbolically illustrates the fleeting nature of memory and histories re-written. Simmons oeuvre includes painting, sculpture, sound, and architectural environments. Simmons was included in the 1994 exhibition, Black Male: Representations of Masculinity in Contemporary American Art, and has since been exhibited and collected worldwide. The artist lives and works in Los Angeles.
