About the artist

Dan Colen

Dan Colen, born in 1979, is an American artist best known for his unique painted sculptures, gum paintings, and installations. Colen employs nontraditional materials in his work like chewing gum, flowers, and street debris in order to reclaim, scrutinize, and transform the everyday object. Through his materials, Colen probes concepts of art history such as “high” and “low” art, artistic agency, and medium specificity. His culturally complex and brash body of work has made waves in the artworld, with his first major show at Gagosian in 2006 instantly selling out. In 2011, he founded Sky High Farm, a Hudson Valley nonprofit committed to increasing food security in New York’s underserved communities. His fundraisers, most recently in 2021 a batch of t-shirts designed by fellow well-known artists, are highly successful and the commodities sold will sell out instantly.

Colen graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2001 and lives and works in New York. The artist is represented by galleries Gagosian and Lévy Gorvy. His work has been exhibited at many museums and is held in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Walker Art Center, among others.
