About the artist

Sanya Kantarovsky

Sanya Kantarovsky is a Russian artist who works across various mediums, but he is best known for his surreal paintings that feature distinctive elements of stylization. Kantarovsky studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI and received his MFA at the University of California, Los Angeles. His works, while figurative, utilize abstraction, exaggeration, and fantasy to emphasize the psychological elements within his compositions. Kantarovsky’s work is shaped by both cultural critique and dark humor. Influenced aesthetically by his upbringing in Moscow, Kantarovsky features architectural details from his childhood that further tie his works memory and the human psyche. Kantarovsky is a white-hot artist at the moment, breaking his own auction record in June 2021 at Phillips Hong Kong with his painting Temperature, which sold for close to $300,000. He also had a solo exhibition up at the same time at Modern Art in London, England featuring a body of paintings made over the past year during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

Kantarovsky’s work has been exhibited in a number of solo and group exhibitions, including his most recent solo exhibition at Luhring Augustine Tribeca, New York NY in 2021. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Tate Modern, London; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C. Kantarovsky currently lives and works in New York, New York.
