About the artist

Ned Vena

Ned Vena, born in 1982, is an American artist who experiements with form and process in his paintings, sculptures, installations, and films. Heavily inspired by Minimalism and Frank Stella’s “Black Paintings,” he creates compositions with both interesting and non-conventional materials and processes. Covering vinyl, spray rubber, security glass, and commercial ink with V-shaped, gridded lines that he first created on the computer, he then transfers them to canvases using stencils. Vena has also affixed these vinyl stencils directly onto gallery walls, raising questions of what is art and what is quotidien. Vena’s process uses both reproducibility and a confined set of rules along with an element of spontaneity.

Ned Vena earned his BFA from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 2005. His work has been included in both solo and group exhibitions, including at the Cohan and Leslie Gallery in New York City, Galerie Gebr. Lehmann in Berlin, Germany, Michael Benevento in Los Angeles, among others. He is currently based in New York City.
