About the artist

Anthony Cudahy

Anthony Cudahy (b. 1989) is a figurative painter based in Brooklyn, New York, where he recently received his MFA from Hunter College. Working from found photographs and with art historical references, Cudahy appropriates images within a painterly context, interested in what he calls “image histories.” He collects these images from queer photo archives, film stills, photos of his partner, hagiographic icons, and photos of his great uncle (Kenny Gardner). He paints these images and photographs, appropriating them through changes to dimension, media, or crop. Through referencing art history and his archival collections, he combines these motifs with his own personal imagery. Cudahy explores intimacy, vulnerability, along with trauma in close and tender scenes that are oftentimes related to recontextualizing aspects of queer history. He has had solo shows at Farewell Books Austin, Texas; 1969 Gallery, New York City; Cooler Gallery, New York City; Mumbo’s Outfit, New York City; and the Java Project, Brooklyn, NY.
