About the artist

Claire Tabouret

Claire Tabouret, born in 1981, is a French-born, Los Angeles-based contemporary artist. Her figurative paintings, drawings, and sculptures explore identity and childhood, oftentimes through the lens of isolation. Tabouret depicts children and women standing solo or among others with mute expressions, sometimes with faces made up or disguised with masks. Her raw and poignant portraiture and group scenes have made her a hot commodity at auction, her paintings Les débutantes (bleu azur) breaking her auction record in May 2021 at Christie’s New York. The work sold for $870,000, over double the high estimate of $300,000. Following recent shows at Perrotin and Night Gallery, collectors can expect her market value to continue to rise.

Finding inspiration in internet and archival material, Tabouret is interested in the passage of time and the vulnerability present between humans and their relationships to one another. These large scale canvases are covered in a primary base of fluorescent paint with loose and expressive brushstrokes, the palette juxtaposing these synthetic and artificial colors against deep earth tones. While her work recalls paintings of the Romanticism movement, she was previously engaged in depictions of aquatic diurnal and nocturnal landscapes. Her series Maison Inondées originally brought her recognition within the art world. The paintings illustrated houses at dusk seemingly abandoned and empty from being flooded, their reflections in the pools of water.

Tabouret studied at the Cooper Union in New York and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and has since exhibited her work internationally. Her work is held in the public collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of ArtPérez Art Museum Miami, and Yuz Museum in Shanghai, among others.
