About the artist

Gabriel Orozco

Gabriel Orozco (born 1962) is a Mexican artist who works in installation, sculpture, painting, and photography. In his work, Orozco explores the relationship between everyday objects and humans, using the urban landscape to contort notions of our perceived reality. His early artistic production followed the tradition of Marcel Duchamp’s readymade, while his later work delves into his interest in mapping and geometric patterns. Some of his standout works include Horses Running Endlessly, a custom chessboard with twice as many squares and only knights as players, and Black Kites, a human skull that he geometrically patterned. Orozco was also featured at Documenta XI in 2002 for which he made terra cotta works that explored traditional Mexican craft and ceramics and its role in a “high art” gallery. Orozco has shown at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Philadelphia Museum of Art; and the Venice Biennale, among others.
