About the artist

Mark Grotjahn

Mark Grotjahn, born in 1968 in Pasadena, CA, is best known for his paintings, sculptures, and works on paper that integrate abstraction and figuration, along with geometry and gesture. Grotjahn’s work demonstrates his ongoing interest in perspective, geometry, and dimension; He often applies early Renaissance techniques to create perspective with his creation of narrowing and expanding geometries. Grotjahn’s early Butterfly series further explores the artist’s interest in abstraction and perspective through colorful, hard-edged, geometric lines, which vanish into various points of perspective. He is also known for his artworks of faces that explore elements of illusion with his paintings that depict the geometric structures of the eyes, nose, and mouth, ultimately accomplishing a sculptural effect. In Grotjahn’s most recent work, he employs a process involving scraping and re-applying thick, impasto layers of paint, entering into a more experimental and spontaneous realm. Grotjahn’s latest works appear intuitive and gestural, yet they also suggest a sense of a carefully devised space. The artist studied at the University of Colorado Boulder and later received an MFA from the University of California Berkeley. After completing his studies, Grotjahn served as the artist-in-residence for the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Madison, Maine, in 1995. He has held exhibitions at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, Kunstmuseum Thun, Switzerland, Portland Art Museum, Oregon, and Aspen Museum of Art, Colorado, among others. Grotjahn’s work can be viewed in several public collections including, the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
