About the artist

Neil Beloufa

Franco-Algerian artist Neïl Beloufa (born 1985) lives in Paris, France where he examines contemporary structures of power and issues plaguing our society through his artistic production, oftentimes exploring themes of utopia and dystopia. Spanning film, sculpture, painting, and installation, Beloufa combines various mediums into single installations to examine and deconstruct systems of belief in our societies. He is celebrated for his ability to employ humor while oftentimes predicting the hard truths that have faced the globe. For example, exhibited in 2020 but originally shot in 2014, Screen Talk is a film by Beloufa that revolves around a virus that has broken out and is wreaking havoc, along with the world’s attempts to quell it, eerily similar to the COVID-19 outbreak. Laced with humor and ridicule, the mini “documentary” exemplifies Beloufa’s abilities to question important issues in a nuanced way while employing wit and techniques that engage viewers.

His work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions in France and abroad, most notably at K11 Shanghai, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Schinkel Pavilion in Berlin, Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, among many others including the 58th annual Venice Biennale in 2019. His work is present in many collections including the collection of the Centre Pompidou, Paris; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Sammlung Goetz, Munich; and Julia Stoschek Collection, Dusseldorf & Berlin.
