About the artist

Nicole Eisenman

Nicole Eisenman, born 1965, is a French-born American artist best known for her figurative paintings. Her works - largely of cartoon figures in tragicomic situations - offer social commentary on issues such as sexuality, identity and politics. She also tackles the tropes of Western art history by playfulling reworking elements of the Renaissance, Baroque and Impressionism. Principally a painter, Eisenman has recently expanded her practice to include sculpture. She is co-founder of the curatorial initiative - Ridykeulous - a project which encourages the exhibition of queer and feminist art.

Born in Verdun, France, Eisenman moved with her family to Scarsdale, New York when she was a child. She went on to receive her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. In 2015, she won a MacArthur Fellowship award for “expanding the critical and expressive capacity of the Western figurative tradition through works that engage contemporary social issues and phenomena.” In 2019, her work was included in both the Venice Biennale and Whitney Biennial.
