About the artist

James Rosenquist

James Rosenquist (1933-2017) was an American artist and one of the leading figures in the Pop art movement. His body of work explored new boundaries in painting, drawing, collage, and printmaking. After studying at the Art Students League of New York, Rosenquist became a commercial sign painter, which greatly influenced his future art production. Creating colossal paintings and collages that drew imagery and source material from advertising and commercial culture, Rosenquist differed from other Pop artists by appropriating Surrealist techniques and imagery in his practice. Rosenquist became best known for his billboard-sized panels that juxtapose collaged fragments of seemingly unrelated subjects against one another to form political or social statements. One of his largest, most ambitious pieces, F-11 (1965), quickly became his breakthrough and most iconic work. Measuring 83 feet across 23 canvases, the work was intended to cover all four walls of the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York City and was created to make a statement on the economic and military goals of the Vietnam War. The billboard-sized work depicts the F-11 Aardvark aircraft juxtaposed against commercial and domestic imagery such as a cake, a hair dryer, spaghetti, and a beach umbrella superimposed upon an atomic blast.

Rosenquist’s ability to transform billboards into blue chip art has garnered sustained interest within the secondary market over the span of multiple decades. His work, from his large-scale paintings to his prints, are consistently popular items at auction, selling from $2,000 to over 3 million USD. Additionally, with dozens of exhibitions attached to his name, Rosenquist has become an influential figure in the Pop Art movement with masterpieces in the collections of the Los Angeles Museum of Art, Tate Modern, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
