About the artist

Bruce Nauman

Bruce Nauman, born in 1941 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, is an American artist whose open-ended body of art spans across a wide range of mediums. Working in sculpture, prints, film, photographs, holograms, interactive environments, neon wall reliefs, and performance, Nauman is known for conceptual work that stresses meaning and interpretation over aesthetics. After receiving his MFA from the University of California, Davis in 1966, Nauman was confronted with the question of “What to do?” in his studio. Artmaking soon became more of an activity rather than a finished product, and it was during this time he captured himself performing repeated actions on film in his studio, exploring the role of his body and the role of the artist in art. Nauman often uses irony and wordplay in his oeuvre; while working in a variety of mediums, his practice circles around a few fundamental themes such as the notion of being controlled, whether in a certain space, in language, or in the body.
