About the artist

Valentin Carron

Valentin Carron (born 1977) is a Swiss artist who is known for his sculptural works that use humor to transform vernacular and cultural objects from his native rural Switzerland, such as shop signs, crucifixes, musical instruments, and architectural details. He appropriates these items and throws into question their authenticity, imbuing them with new meaning. Carron’s practice is materials-based, exploring the relationship between what is real and what is fabricated. Carron represented Switzerland at the 55th Venice Biennale and has had solo exhibitions at Centre d’Edition Contemporain, Geneva (2016); Overbeck-Gesellschaft Lübeck Kunstverein (2016); and Kunsthalle Bern (2014).
