About the artist

Robert Rauschenberg

One of the most well-regarded rejectionists of Abstract Expressionism, Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) was a pioneer in blurring the stark distinction between painting and sculpture that existed at the time and paved the way for the future generation of Pop Art. After serving in the US Navy and attending three schools to study art (Kansas City Art Institute, Academie Julian in Paris, and Black Mountain College in North Carolina), Rauschenberg moved to New York City in 1950. He began transforming his canvases into more complex works of art with found objects and materials. His experiments with sculptural elements in his paintings grew, and he gained notoriety a few years after his arrival to the city with his landmark series, Combines. The paintings, with the addition of discarded objects and everyday material, such as text, turned into three-dimensional collages and broke down the barrier between mediums. Although not the first to incorporate such elements into painting, it had not been done on such a large scale before. Throughout this time Raschenberg was deepening a collaborative friendship with fellow artist Jasper Johns, the two are widely seen as the ones who built the bridge between Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art as the they pushed each other away from traditional modes of artistic practice into ones that incorporated signs and imagery of the everyday quotidien experience. In 1964, Rauschenberg became the first American to win the International Grand Prize in Painting at the Venice Biennale for the ways in which he experimented with three-dimensional paintings and collages. In addition to his painting practice, he engaged in printmaking, performance, set design, and art and technology works. The span of Rauschenberg’s oeuvre can be found in the Tate Gallery in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Walker Center of Art in Minneapolis, the Kunstmuseum Basel, among others.
