About the artist

Conrad Egyir

Conrad Egyir (born 1989) transforms the Black sitters in his portraits using paint, glitter, and found materials. These vibrant works on canvases shaped like large-scale postcards, stamps, and perforated notebook pages combine the graphics and visual elements of Pop art with the narratives of history painting, and he often alludes to art historical moments, explicitly referencing Charles White, Kerry James Marshall, and Kara Walker. Informed by iconography from his home country of Ghana along with other African cultures, religious motifs, and pop culture, Egyir explores themes of identity politics, community, ethics, American culture, and migration in his work.

Egyir has found increasing momentum and success in his practice. In 2020 he had his first solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit and Beyoncé included a print of his portraits in her visual album Black is King. A second solo exhibition followed in 2021 at the Institute of Contemporary Art San José.
